In response to Purse Creation Rewards.

Did you ever wilful renounce something you thought very important to you - habit/ lifestyle/... to find out how you can live without and to define your own limits?
(I for example stopped buying clothes- no shoes, no socks, no shirts, really nothing at all- for one year) Or if you think about, what would be a challenging renunciation in this sense?

I can't imagine not purchasing clothing for one year, but I think it would be great. (especially for my husband!) Currently, I do try to get rid of things when new things come in-out with the old, in with the new.

I use that rule also -- if something new comes in, something else must go -- and not just with clothes.

it is true, I do enjoy very much beautiful things and normally I want to have them! This causes always a kind of stress because you can't have all, unfortunately.
So you have to do a choice, only in my case it was clear I won't buy anything for one year and this was really the good part- realizing beauty with the distance won by the liberty not to think about if you want to have it or not, this made me feel very free!
Concerning my husband who was very happy in the beginnig about my money-saving decision, he was even more happy when I stopped it and dressed myself in new attractive dresses!

I think not buying also makes you creative in aquiring things that you actually do need. Like borrowing a dress for a special occasion instead of buying one.

Hope this one gets chosen!

I think, that many people, infortunately, have no choice for this kind of question, that applies to them.
(they can really judge their llimits!)
Mais cela peut être un bon test.

I totally agree with you and in my opinion the richer societies aren't sufficiently aware of their responsibility. But in the end it is easier (not really easy!) to change myself than the whole society!

If a majority of people had the courage to do it as you or simply to reflect, this would be a great progress.

Hi Petra
Good topic
At the end of 60's, some hippies folks thought the same idea about our consumer society!
I do not know if I should be able to renounce something during one year but in these time of expensive life it could be a good way of saving a little money !
Have a fun year !

I had that fun year two years ago and you are right I saved some money! It really felt good to look at wonderful things completely free, just enjoying the existence of beauty! And I hate the feeling to buy something just to think about what I should buy next, for me it is time and money waste and a kind of brain pollution.
I guess for the moment we are sharing the same rain, bonne courage pour ca!

i'd renounce pop cultures icons (",)

are they important for you? Lol!

This would be a very interesting purse indeed. I think the only thing I have been able to permanently renounce is religion. If I really wanted to challenge myself I would try to renounce wine. I think I could only do it for a short period of time however- a year would certainly be impossible.
Capital idea for a purse Madame Freestyle!
It would really make everyone think.

I agree, that's a long time for no wine drinking! I think this is because there are different ways to renounce. I once asked my dentist to do his job (I was 16 and the tooth completely ruined) without anesthesia, he refused, so I looked for one who worked to my conditions, will say it was relative easy to handle the pain because I knew time is limited and I just have to force my will. Not buying things you would love to, so the way to resist to material things, I would say is the easiest renunciation. The most difficult is to renounce something related to the soul, or let's say to the feelings- the glass of wine makes you feel relaxed, eating good things makes you feel comfortable, meeting with friends is related to social security. I'm very curious
what everyone is thinking about the subject, thank you chere Menouvre for your encouragement!

Madame Octinomos, I confess I'm far away from that! As a fashion designer I really do love clothes and all luxurious beautyful things and I enjoy it terribly to buy those things for me. I still have to do hard renunciation exercises to overcome with all that stuff -puh!!!

You are a fashion designer but you gave up buying clothes for a year? Wow, pretty impressive.

This is a great topic. I hope that it gets picked!

comment Submitted by freestyle on Sun, 05/25/2008 - 10:45am.

yes, I thought it must hurt a bit to make sense, lol! But seriously, I just don't like the idea to be dependent of all those beautyful things even if I love to enjoy them.
I really would like to know what the people here think about the subject!
