Every year we hear the news about more and more dropouts in our public schools. Many of these dropouts will turn to crime and/or drugs. If they manage to survive this, they will likely remain in the lower economic classes of this society and suffer many more hardships than if they had completed their education.
In this very highly technological society we need a much higher percentage of our children to finish their education, not less if society is to function at all. If you've seen the bumper sticker, "Wouldn't it be a great day when the Pentagon had to have a bake sale to buy a new bomber and the schools had all the money they need" and agreed with the sentiment that we never have a problem finding the money for 30 million dollar airplanes and five billion dollar ships, but when it comes to our nation's children, they are always short changed, then you are aware of the root cause of the problems in our society.
When a President of the United States is allowed to go around the world using bombers and tanks to solve our problems what lessons are given to the children? Is there any surprise that violence in this country is on the rise as well as falling education?
What would be your plan to solve this very serious problem with our society?

Great topic! But I am already out of votes!
This is an important question even for those without kids since we are all affected by what is taught and not taught.
This topic is very interesting to me. I would personally blame television for the downfall in education as it is being used more and more in child care centers across the nation and dumbing down America.
This topic has great potential. I have a lot of ideas bouncing around in my head that I'd love to get out where others can see them and either nod or shake their heads. I was educated in public schools, but I know many home-schooled kids, and I think they're doing just great.

if this topic gets picked, i would love to share my ideas about the need for more (affordable!) alternatives to the failing institutional public school sytem. think homeschool co-ops, privately-funded alternative schools, and even more "radical" ideas such as apprenticing teens to professionals who work in the field they are interested in. As long as kids are not shown that they CAN have their own unique, valuable, and self-directed learning experiences in school, they are going to continue to go looking elsewhere for the excitement and the challenges they so desperately seek.
I totally agree! Homeschools are a great option. Too bad homeschoolers ger alot of flack from local government officials in some communities. Some people can't see past the dominant paradigm. This is a great topic.
I've never seen that bumper sticker before, but it sure hits the nail on the head!
