The collection of wild animals for display has been a human practice since ancient times: first in the private collections of royalty and later in the public institutions that evolved into modern-day zoos. The purposes for collecting and displaying animals -- which have included entertainment, education, conservation, recreation, research and profit -- have not been without controversy. Thus the question I pose is an ethical one. In light of the motives for having zoos, is it morally acceptable to deprived these animals of their natural habitat and freedom?
